Finance explained by people who are not selling it

What Is Working Capital is an independent educational site about the everyday money mechanics of small businesses: working capital, cash flow, liquidity ratios, supplier and customer terms, and the options for financing a gap.

Why we started

If you run a small business and search for help with cash flow, most of what you find is written by lenders and brokers. Some of it is useful, but the explanation usually stops where the product begins, and the parts owners most need, such as how much a facility really costs over a year or when it stops making sense, are rarely spelled out. We built this site to fill that gap with calm, practical explanations.

Who writes the articles

Articles are written and maintained by the What Is Working Capital team, a small group of writers and editors interested in making business finance understandable. We are not a bank, lender, broker or accounting firm, and we do not present ourselves as licensed advisers. That is exactly why every article carries a reminder to check decisions with a professional who knows your circumstances.

How we write and check content

  • We explain standard, widely taught concepts such as the working capital formula, liquidity ratios and the cash conversion cycle.
  • Examples use invented businesses and round numbers so the arithmetic is easy to follow. We show every step so you can check it.
  • We avoid statistics, rankings or claims we cannot support, and we do not publish reviews of individual lenders.
  • Where rules differ by country or state, such as late-payment fees or lending disclosures, we say so rather than guessing.
  • Every article shows the date it was last reviewed. If you spot a mistake, tell us and we will correct it.

How the site is funded

The site is supported by advertising served by Google AdSense. Advertisers do not choose or review our topics, and ads are kept separate from article content. We do not take loan applications, sell leads or earn commission from lenders for anything you read here. You can read about cookies and advertising in our privacy policy.

What we will never do

We will not tell you which specific lender to use, pretend to have tested financial products, publish made-up testimonials, or ask for your financial details. If a page ever seems to do any of those things, please let us know.
